Burn casualties among children are very common in Ethiopia.  Survival rate for  children admitted with major burns is very low due to infection and lack of proper treatment. Those that survive smaller or larger burns often end up with disfiguring deformities and handicap due to scar contraction.

Children with post burn deformities and handicap have few possibilities for social and educational development.

Hans Petter Schjelderup from Harstad, northern Norway sustained a terrible high voltage injury in August 2005. He was admitted to the Burn Centre at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen where burn specialist Dr Einar Eriksen got involved in the medical care of Hans Petter and helped save his life.

Hans Petter and Dr Eriksen now share a common vision to help children with burns in Ethiopia.

Why Ethiopia?

Both Hans Petter and Dr. Eriksen have a close relationship to this country.  Dr. Eriksen grew up in Ethiopia.  Realizing the poor conditions for burned patients in this country he, today a burn specialist, has a strong desire to help.  

Hans Petter's adopted son, Emrick, was born in Ethiopia.

During Hans Petter's recovery time at the Burn Center in Bergen, Norway, Dr. Eriksen and he learned during conversations about the other ties to Ethiopia.  It had been the dream of Dr. Eriksen to one day build a pediatric burn center in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.  Hans Petter in gratitude to Dr. Eriksen for having saved his life decided to dedicate himself to making this dream come true.  Now he and Dr. Eriksen work together to help children in Ethiopia survive burn accidents and live as normal a life as possible afterwards.
